Oak Ridge soccer falls to Thunder

Returning from spring break winners of five straight, Oak Ridge soccer dropped its nonleague match 1-o to visiting Rocklin Tuesday.

“We didn’t play that well. It was similar to the Bella Vista game we had earlier this season (1-0 loss). It was one of those that we knew was going to be a close game, with one goal either way deciding it. I thought we started pretty well, and if we had gotten a goal on the board, I think we would have won, because of how strong the defense was,” Trojan coach Joe Champion said.

Oak Ridge, looking to take the early advantage, came out with aggression. The Trojans got their first chance in the 13th minute when Anna Lippuner took a lead pass with nothing but the goalie to beat. Unfortunately, the pass was struck too hard and she was unable to corral it.

In the 15th minute, Lippuner got a shot off on an open goal but it went too far to the right and bounced out of bounds. While the offense struggled, the Trojan defense was stellar. Rocklin’s only shot on goal in the first half was a boot from Leah Steele that was easily stopped by Oak Ridge goalkeeper Nina Grimes.

In the second half, the Thunder put one in in the 44th minute when Steele drew Grimes before finding Emily Rau who poked it in to the right side of the net.

Oak Ridge picked up the intensity and went after the equalizer but late opportunities came up short. In the 64th minute, Julia Crawford’s shot was stopped and after Olivia Frace picked off the goalkeeper’s kick and had a clear shot at the goal, her boot veered just wide right.

Troy had several desperation attempts in the waning minutes but they didn’t find their way to the back of the net and the win streak was snapped.

“The girls did just come off of a week break, so we’ll get back into it and get our focus back for some important games next week. We’re disappointed, but there are some important lessons, and we’ll probably get a little more of the defeat,” Champion said.

The Trojans fall to 7-2-1 (3-0 DRL) on the year, and return to league play next week when they visit Pleasant Grove and face St. Francis at home.
