SACRAMENTO — Seven Delta River League teams, including Oak Ridge and Ponderosa, converged last weekend at Jesuit for the league swim championships.
From the Trojans, three individual and two relay championship records were broken. From the Bruins, two individual championship records were broken.
Oak Ridge placed second in the team standings, the girls just seven points behind St. Francis (548-541) while the varsity boys finished strong behind Jesuit (582-549). Ponderosa’s boys and girls both finished fourth scoring 224 and 223, respectively.
Troy’s Brandon Mills set records in the 200 IM (1:56.65) and 100 breaststroke (58.96) while Bruin Andy Cunningham also set records in the 500 freestyle (4:36.32) and 100 backstroke (52.94).
Also setting a league record from Oak Ridge was Joshua Verner in the 100 butterfly (52.49) Verner also placed 2nd in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.67).
The Trojan varsity boys broke league records in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. The 200 medley team of Dylan Kubick, Trevor Dong, Garrison Yeandle and Mills finished with a time of 1:38.40. The 400 free relay team of Dylan Kubick, Joshua Verner, Trevor Dong and Garrison Yeandle finished with a time of 3:13.06 and set a new school record.
“What a great weekend,” said Oak Ridge Coach Patrick Foster. “All the kids swam great and I am so proud of all of their efforts.”
Yeandle from Oak Ridge won the boys 50 free (21.97) and the 100 free (48.08). Kubick placed second in both the boys 200 IM (1:56.78) and 100 back (54.09).
Adding to the points for the Oak Ridge girls were Maddie Velez who won the 500 Free (5:11.44) and placed second in the 100 fly (1:00.44).
The 200 Free Relay team of Morgan Jones, Cypress Lampe, Mikayla Mefford and Kayla Rios finished first with a time of 1:43.28.
Cypress Lampe placed second in both her events (100 free 53.91 and 100 breast 1:09.49). Morgan Jones placed second in the 50 free (25.69) and finished 3rd in the 100 free (56.45). Third place finishes came from Annie Harriman in the 200 IM (2:19.98) and 100 back (1:03.41), and Kayla Rios finished third in the 200 free (2:00.62).
On the girl’s side from Ponderosa, Taylor Lehr was the top female swimmer in the league. She placed first in both the 200 free (1:57.06) and the 100 back (59.44).
For the boys from Ponderosa, Graham McClone placed second in the 100 free (48.94) and anchored the second place 200 medley relay team with teammates Cunningham, Zach Pickett and Spencer Harrison with a time of 1:39.98.
The girls 200 medley relay (1:59.04) and 200 free relay (1:46.69) took third place with teammates Maise Mora, Adrianne Dreese, Lehr and Kylie Wiesner.
“The swimmers did a great job,” said Ponderosa Coach Mike Smith. “Their hard work this season paid off”
The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section swim meet is Thursday, May 10 (girls prelims); Friday, May 11 (boys prelims); and Saturday, May 12 (finals) at Tokay High School in Lodi. Swimmers qualify by making time standards.
