Oak Ridge tennis advances in team playoffs

FOLSOM — Much like the wind that swept through Folsom’s Broadstone Racquet Club Tuesday, Oak Ridge High’s girls tennis team breezed past Napa 7-2 to open the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I team playoffs.

The Lady Trojans won four-of-six singles and all three doubles matches from the Monticello Empire League’s second seed. Oak Ridge, the Delta River League’s second seed, advances to face Davis on Monday.

“I’d heard from some coaches that if we play up to our capabilities we shouldn’t have too much trouble (against Napa) and from warmups I could tell that’d be the case,” Troy coach Ralph Clark said. “We played Davis in the preseason and it went pretty bad. In my 10 years it was the worst team match in terms of the girls not coming ready to play.”

One who did Tuesday was freshman Hannah Crookham who sailed to a quick 6-0, 6-0 win and spent the rest of the afternoon taking scores on the clipboard.

“I was able to hit with a lot of top spin and keep the ball in play. She wanted to keep the ball in play as well but I out-consistented her,” said Crookham who may have invented new tennis terminology.

In the singles department, the wins rolled in as senior Julia Dunnigan and Rachel Librach and Lauren Ropollo notified Crookham of straight-sets victories.

“My matched flowed well. I went in feeling this could be my last match so if I lost I’d try my hardest but I’d do anything I could to win,” Dunnigan said. “It was challenging with the wind to get the ball over the net and I was able to do that more than my opponent.”

Another of example of “out-consistented” play.

The Trojan doubles duo’s Miranda Miller-Teja Chalamcherla, Alexa Hill-Gabby Zeagler and Tia Nguyen-Meghan Schoener all posted easy wins to give Oak Ridge an early indication that the team was headed to the next round.

“It went very well. We had to play in the wind but we were all very consistent and it ended up being pretty easy matches,” Hill said.

That meant they weren’t “out-consistented.”
