Oak Ridge v-ball wins playoff opener

GRANITE BAY — The Oak Ridge boys volleyball team upended host Granite Bay Thursday, wining the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoff opener 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23.

The victory advanced the Trojans to next Tuesday’s showdown at Jesuit with the semifinals clash determining who goes on to the title game. Troy’s only two Delta River League losses were to the Marauders who swept the home-and-home series.

With Thursday’s win, Oak Ridge avenged an earlier 3-1 setback in mid-March to the Grizzlies who won the nonleague match in El Dorado Hills.

Against Granite Bay, Four Trojans: Tim Spykerman, Jonathan Tuttle, Jack Hoisington and Trent Stigerts all had double-digit kills for the evening thanks to the setting of Connor Dunham wo kit up the stat sheet with 48 assists.

Oak Ridge (26-8) was also a force at the net with Tuttle and Spykerman each getting credit for eight blocks.

In other Division I action, Ponderosa saw its season end 3-0 to Rocklin. The Bruins finished with an overall record of 18-11.

In Division II play, Union Mine (17-6) defeated host Whitney 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 for its second playoff win. The Wildcats, 15-0 in the Capital Athletic League, ended their season 20-4.
