OR’s young cross country teams bring home gold, silver

Oak Ridge High Schools frosh/soph teams earned medals at the seventh annual Trojan Cross Country Invitational at the Willow Hills cross country course at Folsom High School on Oct. 1.

The frosh/soph girls brought home the gold, with a first-place 31 points. The girls are undefeated in the four meets they have competed in this season.

Sami Kilcollins led her team (third place) and was joined by Whitney Wilhelmy (fifth place), Femke Keukenkamp (sixth place), Mindy Ong (seventh place) and Aishani Kumar (12th place).

The frosh/soph boys also raced very well, placing second with 66 points. Teammates Colin Pilcher (seventh place), Jordan Hordesky (11th place), JT Janecek (15th place), Nick Campanello (18th place) and Alex Merry (19th place) led the way.

Oak Ridge had two junior varsity runners, Frank Sciales and Josh Michael, who competed. Sciales placed eighth and Michael placed 10th.

Seventeen high schools competed at the invitational. The youth race (ages 8-14) was the largest in the invitational’s history with 161 runners (91 boys and 70 girls) who completed the race.

The top 20 high school runners in each race received medals. The 10 youth race boys and the top 10 youth race girls received medals. The non-top 10 youth race runners received ribbons for completing the 1.5 mile course. The Frosh/Soph runners raced 3300 meters (2.06 miles) and the varsity and junior varsity runners raced 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

About 50 volunteers contributed to the meet’s success.

The Oak Ridge cross country teams will be competing at their first Delta River League meet on Wednesday, Oct. 5. All the teams in the Delta River League will be competing at this meet. The Oct. 5 meet will be held at Granite Regional Park. The race schedule is as follows: Frosh/Soph boys at 4 p.m., Frosh/Soph girls at 4:20, Varsity boys at 4:45, Varsity girls at 5:15.
