Ponderosa soccer blasts by Trojans
Following up its 2-1 win over Pleasant Grove to close last week, Ponderosa picked up another soccer victory in dispatching rival Oak Ridge 4-0 Tuesday in Delta River League action.
“We expected Oak Ridge to come out today and play really hard, they always do,” Bruin coach Greg Spangler said. “(Winning against Oak Ridge) is always huge, we never take that for granted.”
The Trojans did come out and play tough and hung with the Bruins early on. Senior Danny Bonal led an Oak Ridge attack that almost scored in the fifth minute, but Bonal’s cross to Douglas James sailed. Trojan goalie Tanner Rosenbaum held steady, blocking a Jared Saint shot but despite another clutch save couldn’t shut Ponderosa out in the first half as Trevor Swartz broke a scoreless tie in the 39th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at halftime.
“It was a very close game throughout — all credit to Oak Ridge,” Spangler said regarding the misleading final score.
Rosenbaum made another quality save to open the second half and the Trojans had another scoring opportunity when Jack Vorster got past his defender but had his shot was blocked. Play slowed down after that until Cameron Spencer put Ponderosa up by two in the 60th minute when he poked a shot through a scrum in front of the goal.
With the two-goal lead, the Ponderosa attack added on. In the 75th minute, Swartz put another goal through and, in the waning moments, Jonathon Morgan also scored.
“I don’t think the schedule could get any harder than it has been the past couple games, but if we keep playing at this level and playing hard, we’ll be fine,” Spangler said.
The JV teams tied 1-1. The varsity Bruins (6-1, 2-1) next play against Folsom while the Trojans’ (2-5, 0-3) next opponent is Pleasant Grove.
