Ponderosa sweeps Trojans
SHINGLE SPRINGS — Six Delta River League sets equals two wins for Ponderosa which followed up its victory at Jesuit with Friday’s 26-24, 25-21, 25-14 victory over visiting Oak Ridge.
After the first set went overtime, the Bruins led the second after breaking a 13-13 tie before storming back from an early deficit in the third to sweep.
“When we make less errors and play our game we win sets,” Ponderosa coach Amy Stockett said. “I asked the guys early to increase the lead (from set to set) and we did.”
Friday’s action featured high-flying play on both sides of the net though Ponderosa held the edge behind the play of Tanner Charon (10 kills), Haward Gomes, Kellen Salluce, Josh Bist and Davis Alexander. The trio combined for 34 kills — most off assists from setter Taylor Charon (37).
“We came out with the same mentality we had against Jesuit and that was that we’d win,” Tanner said. “this team is built on power hitters and with my brother’s sets, our offense can overpower the defense.”
The Trojans, who were without their starting setter, relied on Sam Greenleaf’s passing skill and savvy all-around play and the hitting of Chase Barri, Kellian Evans, Adrian Griffith and others to stay close. To stay alive, Barri’s block and Greenleaf’s smash that Ponderosa knocked out helped Oak Ridge to a quick 3-0 lead to open the last set. After the Bruins’ 15-1 run, Troy’s chance to extend had slipped.
“We had it but let it go,” Trojan coach Melanie DeMure said. “I asked the guys to do one thing, ‘talk,’ and we didn’t.”
Oak Ridge got to within 10-17 but faded as Kristian Charron’s save set up Taylor’s pass for Gomes’ kill up the middle; Bist deposited a deflection back down and Nic Davis (3 aces) landed an ace.
Salluce’s block made it 23-11 as Ponderosa cruised to the finish line.
