Robertson’s hit lifts D’backs over Troy

EL DORADO — Mickaela Robertson’s two-out single through the right side in the bottom of the ninth inning last week scored Christina Auger from third base, giving host Union Mine the 6-5 nonleague victory over Oak Ridge.

Robertson’s heroics came an at bat after Auger had tripled. Auger had her own heroics two innings earlier with a two-strike, two-out clutch hit that sent the game to extra innings. The Trojans lost a 5-1 lead and opportunity to avenge an earlier defeat at the hands of the Lady Diamondbacks.

Oak Ridge coasted in the early innings behind left-handed pitcher Christina Arace whose change of speeds kept Union Mine off balance. The Trojans scored four times in the second innings off D’back pitcher Sarah Phillis as Lindsey Zito doubled, Caitlyn Olan singled, Zito scored on a doubled steal, Anna Campos walked, Jade Mercadel snuck a two-run single up the middle and scored on Renee Bardini’s fielder’s choice.

Union Mine answered with one in the third as Phillis singled, stole second, went to third on Amy Pedretti’s grounder the opposite way and scored on Jessica Dager’s single to center.

Oak Ridge tacked a run onto its 4-1 advantage in the fifth as Jackie Schmaeling doubled, Lauren Bertoy laid down a bunt single and Jade Matsumoto singled in Schmaeling.

The D’backs knocked Arace out in the bottom half as Dager (4-for-4) doubled in Phillis (3-for-5) and Auger (3-for-4) singled in Dager but Trojan reliever Alyssa Burns shut the door with an inning-ending strikeout and zipped through a 1-2-3 sixth.

Down to its last three outs, Union Mine extended the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Phillis doubled, Dager walked with one down and Phillis tagged and raced in on Katie Helmholtz’ shot to right that Maddie Campos plucked inches above the ground. Auger’s single plated Dager to tie the score at 5-5.

Oak Ridge dodged a bullet in the eighth as two errors that sandwiched Hallie Scott’s single to left field loaded the bases with no outs for the D’backs. Bardini’s grab of a line drive in center froze the baserunners, Burns handled a comebacker for the force at the plate and a flyout to Maddie in right squelched the threat.

Bertroy singled to open the ninth and was bunted up by Matsumoto but left stranded as the hosts came to bat. After Schmaeling gunned down Dager’s steal of second when the D’back sophomore over-slid the bag on her attempt, Auger’s two-out triple set the stage for Robertson to deliver the win.

Bardini went 2-for-5 with a double for Oak Ridge, Matsumoto was 2-for-4 with a double, and Bertoy was 2-for-4.
