Sipes headed to States

Oak Ridge High School’s Jacob Sipes will represent his school at the state track and field meet.

The junior qualified to compete in the 300-meter hurdles with his third place finish at the Masters last week.

“It has been quite a season for Jacob in the 300-meter hurdles,” according to coach Rob Fairley. “His first race … was on March 24 and he has shown significant improvement with his performances over the last two months. Jacob has the fifth fastest time (37.77) in the state.”

Jacob will travel to Clovis on May 31 to compete at Buchanan High School. He’s striving to qualify for the finals on June 1, when the top nine athletes in the state will compete against each other.

Also at the Masters on May 23 & 24, the boys 4 x 100-meter relay team (Dominick Worsham, Zach Youngberg, Bryce Williams, Jacob Sipes) places 6th with a time of 42.65. This relay team set a school record with a time of 42.35 at the Delta River League finals. They improved the school record by eight-tenths of second.

Oak Ridge results at the Masters meet:

Jacob Sipes: boys 300-meter hurdles, 3rd, 38.79 (state meet qualifier)

Boys 4  x 100-meter relay team, 6th, 42.65

Carina Williams: girls high jump, NH

Justin Priest: boys high jump, tied for 13th, 5 feet and 11 inches

Will Vaughn: boys high jump, tied for 8th, 6 feet and 1 inch

Austin Laut: boys pole vault, tied for 17th, 12 feet and 10 inches

Kasian Strawick: boys pole vault, tied for 17th, 12 feet and 10 inches

Ellie Velez: girls 1,600-meter run, 22nd, 5:27.84

Jake Zeltner: boys 1,600-meter run, 13th, 4:26.83

Rachel Peterson: girls 3.200-meter run, 8th, 11:08.16

Girls 4 x 400-meter relay team (Sabrina Andrus, Caitlin Jolette, Jasmine Pears, Kristina O’Donnell): 10th in the trials, 4:06.60
