Soccer: Trojans tie Woodcreek

Oak Ridge 0, Woodcreek 0

By Brandon Anicich

EL DORADO HILLS — Oak Ridge High’s varsity boys soccer program wrapped up preseason action Tuesday at home, playing visiting Woodcreek to a 0-0 draw.

Both teams enjoyed an even share of possession throughout the match, but stingy defenses on both ends kept any momentum in check. Woodcreek’s caliber of play was a crucial test for the Trojans ramping up toward league play.

Head coach Joe Champion had designed the preseason schedule to reflect teams progressively more challenging as it prepares to open up Delta River League action October 1 against Folsom.

Connor Hayes and Ryan Mullin shared duties guarding the net, and each collected a handful of saves, while Reese Benson and Noah Benson worked in tandem with Connor Flynn and Kevin Eccles to maintain a stout defensive line. Neither team garnered more than a few shots on frame — but the matchup was expected to be tight against a physical Woodcreek squad, and forward Hunter Tully was proud of his teammates for staying tough despite being outsized.

“We knew (Woodcreek) was going to be very physical,” Tully said. “Even though we are a smaller team, I felt like we held our own and showed them that we can play tough against anyone.”

Oak Ridge is currently ranked in the Top 25 teams in California, a ranking that will fluxuate heavily depending on the performance of the Trojans against league powerhouse Jesuit as well as Ponderosa, Folsom and Pleasant Grove.

“Woodcreek is a very physical team, a very direct team,” Champion said. “All of their throw ins and corners make it into the box. With so many balls entering the box, all it takes is one unlucky bounce for them to take a lead. I think our defensive play was outstanding to keep it even today.”
