Sophomore boys outrun competition at Willow Hills

Oak Ridge’s sophomore boys cross country runners celebrated a first-place finish at the Bronco Invite at the Willow Hills course in Folsom Saturday.

The sophomore boys’ team scored 44 points to convincingly win the large school race. The second place team in the sophomore boys’ race was Bella Vista with 78 points. Trojan Jordan Hordesky’s first-place finish led the team to its victory. He covered the challenging 3,400 meter course in 11:33 (5:28 per mile pace), beating the second-place finisher Kyle Faulkner from Franklin (Elk Grove) by 14 seconds. Alex Merry places third; Brett Ford eighth and Patrick Irwin ninth.

The Bronco Invite had 35 large schools and 45 small schools registered. The Frosh/Soph course is 3,400 meters and the Varsity/Junior Varsity course is 5,000 meters. Both courses feature challenging hills.

Eleven Oak Ridge runners obtained medals by placing in the top 20 or 25 in their races. Ellie Velez placed third in the varsity girls’ large school race. Briana Dulgar and Mikhayla Polivka placed third and thirteenth, respectively, in the Frosh/Soph girls’ large school race. Lauren Martinez earned a medal in the Frosh/Soph girls’ large school race by placing 23rd. Mindy Ong placed eighth in the Junior Varsity girls’ race. Kyle Kauffman (eighth place), Sebastian Gardney (16th place), and Jason Phen (19th place) earned medals in the freshmen boys’ large school race.

The next meet for the Oak Ridge cross country teams is a league meet on Oct. 17 at Granite Regional Park.
