Sophomore runners take 1st

It was a great day of racing for the Oak Ridge cross country athletes at the sub-section meet at Angels Camp on Nov. 9.

Oak Ridge had 23 runners qualify for the section meet. The varsity boys’ team, varsity girls’ team and the sophomore boys’ team qualified for sections.

Alison Bamford qualified for sections in the D1/D2 JV girls’ race by placing 29th. Nolan Vanhonsebrouck qualified for sections in the  freshmen boys’ D1 race by placing 39th. Alex Merry and Patrick Irwin lead the varsity boys’ team to an eight place finish in the D1 race by placing 10th and 24th, respectively. Briana Dulgar and Mikhayla Polivka lead the varsity girls’ team to a fifth place finish in the D1 race by placing 16th and 18th, respectively. Arial Hendrickson raced well in the varsity girls’ race placing 23rd.

The top 10 varsity teams at the sub-section meet qualify for the section meet. The top twenty-five varsity runners earned handsome CIF medals. The varsity course is a challenging three-mile course with quite a few hills.

The sophomore boys’ team turned in its best performance of the season by convincingly winning the D1 race. Oak Ridge scored 43 points and Davis placed second with 88 points. Six sophomore boys placed in the top 20. Austin Streetman and Luke Bricca lead the sophomore boys’ team by placing second and fourth, respectively. The top 20 runners in the non-varsity races earned CIF medals. The freshmen/sophomore course is a challenging two-mile course with numerous hills.

Katie Sanfelice raced well in the Frosh/Soph D1 race placing 62nd.

Garrett Bardini and Chris Buckley lead the JV boys’ team to a 14th place finish in the D1/D2 race by placing 35th and 72nd, respectively.

Karina Kauffman and Sami Jo Sanfelice raced well in the JV girls’ D1/D2 race by placing 49th and 144th, respectively.

Nick Gladwell and Matthew Kerr raced well in the D1 freshmen boys’ race by placing 54th and 55th, respectively.

The 23 athletes who qualified for the section meet will be training well this week to get prepared for the section meet on Nov. 16 at the Willow Hills course located behind the Folsom High School stadium. The top two varsity boys’ D1 teams at the section meet qualify for the state meet. The top three varsity girls’ D1 teams at the section meet qualify for the state meet. There are 26 D1 schools registered for cross country in the Sac-Joaquin section. The section meet race schedule for the Oak Ridge athletes is as follows: freshmen boys D1/D2 at 9 a.m., sophomore boys D1/D2 at 9:40 a.m., varsity girls D1 at 10 a.m., Varsity Boys D1 at 11 a.m., JV Girls D1/D2 at 12:02 p.m.
