Bailey Cook’s two-out, sixth-inning double to the gap in left-center scored pinch-runner Jenna Fitzgerald all the way from first base in Oak Ridge’s 5-4 victory over Union Mine.
The Trojans’ come-from-behind win Saturday morning opened Oak Ridge’s round-robin tournament. Both Troy and the D’backs played Center in the afternoon.
Trailing 4-2, Caitlyn Olan’s triple into the right-field corner started the Oak Ridge rally. Amber Orchard, who earlier singled and doubled, ripped the next pitch on a line to dead center over the fence to tie the score at 4s.
After Alyssa Burns reached, Cook came through as Fitzgerald shifted to high gear for her trek around the bases.
Union Mine had three more outs and had two on after a Larissa Garcia single and Calista Almer walk but Burns (five strikeouts) nailed down the last out.
Olan’s all-too-common two-run sacrifice fly to plate Taylor Railey and Cameron Kirtlan staked Oak Ridge to the early lead against D’back starter Beth Hammer.
Union Mine came right back as Laura Dager singled, Mickaela Robertson reached on an error, Carley Stevens walked as did Brianna Hall to force in a run. Almer then doubled in two and an illegal pitch allowed Hall to trot home.
From there, both Burns and Hammer put zeroes on the board until the sixth when Oak Ridge came back.
