Oak Ridge pitching alums Jordan Mills and Jeff McKenzie were both taken in the 28th round of last week’s Major League Baseball draft.
Mills a junior at St. Mary’s, was taken with the first pick of the round by the Houston Astros and has the option to sign or return to school for his senior season. Currently pitching in the Northwest League, Mills was recently selected to the the All-West Coast Conference first team.
McKenzie was Cal State Bakersfield’s top pitcher last season as a senior and turned in sparkling wins at UC Davis and Sacramento State. He also pitched and won the JC state title game for Delta College two years ago.

Seven Trojan baseball players recieved All Metro recognition, led by San Jose State bound shortstop Alec de Watteville who was selected to the first team. The other six were honorable mention: catcher Logan Marston; infielders Ross Dwelley and Mikey Meinhofer; pitchers Tommy Hummer and Austin Root; outfielder FP Santangelo. El Dorado’s Matt Smith was also an honorable mention pick.

Area teams were well represented for the All Metro Softball Team. Lady Trojan Lauren Bertoy was named to the first team while Union Mine’s Sarah Phillis was placed on the second team. Golden Sierra hitter Savannah Stephens and pitcher Hollie Johnson, the Sierra Delta League MVP, were nonorable mention. Joining them were Oak Ridge catcher Jackie Schmaeling and Ponderosa outfielder Taylor Eilders.
