How do you get a reluctant child to put her face in the water to learn to swim?

For 30 years Steve Wallen has studied and practiced the best methods for teaching his students, whether they’re 6 months or 82, new swimmers or triathletes wanting to perfect their strokes. Today Wallen is one of the area’s most sought after swim instructors and due to customer demand he’s expanding Steve Wallen Swim School yet again.

More than two decades ago Wallen began teaching swim lessons in his private backyard pool. When word of his students’ successes spread, far beyond the confines of his own neighborhood, Wallen established a year-round, 4,500-square-foot indoor facility in the El Dorado Hills Business Park in 2008. Today, with 200 students on average daily and 25 swim instructors, a 900-square-foot addition is under way and will be completed later this spring. The expansion includes more dressing rooms, bathrooms and parent viewing areas.

“With more restrooms and changing rooms, there should be no more waiting in line to get out of wet suits,” said Wallen.

And more space will be an added benefit for private parties too. Besides the current offering of birthday parties, Steve and his son Kaleb said the larger space will allow for banquets and end-of-season sport parties.

The swim school has grown but Steve never veers from his proven, signature philosophies, including, “Face in the Water is Magic.”  “It helps that the pool is always a warm and toasty 90 degrees,” he said. Steve and Kaleb personally train each one of the current 25 swim instructors on staff. Classes are offered for one, two or three students at a time and for ages 6 months on up, regardless of skill level.

“Even during these tough economic times people aren’t cutting back on swim lessons, which are really a life skill, and I think that speaks well of our community,” Steve said.

Steve Wallen Swim School is located at 1230 Glenhaven Court, Suite 100, in El Dorado Hills and is open seven days a week. Visit wallenswim.com or call (916) 939-7075 for more information.
