Subjeck takes third at Doc Buchanan Invitational

CLOVIS — Oak Ridge High 160-pounder Keaton Subjeck defeated Healdsburg’s Matthew Tsarnas 3-0 to win third place Saturday at the 93-team field of the Doc Buchanan Invitational at Clovis High School. Ponderosa’s Nick Troquato (170) went 4-2 to take seventh.

After a semifinals setback, Subjeck decisioned Poway’s Stevie Cervantes 5-2 to advance. The Trojan junior had lost a close 4-3 decision to second-seed Javier Mandera of Roseburg, Ore. in the semifinals before battling back. Last year, Subjeck was eighth in the state at 145.

According to Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan, the Doc Buchanan is considered as tough as March’s California State Wrestling Championships at Bakersfield’s Rabobank Arena. Subjeck, seeded third, won an outbracket match, prevailed 20-5 for a technical fall, scored a 12-0 major decision and a first-period pin Friday to set up the Mandera match.

Troquato won his first two, lost his quarterfinal, split his next two and decisioned Amador Valley’s Richard Nevearez 6-2 for seventh.

Also competing for Oak Ridge was Trey Reese, Cameron Miller, Taylor Ellerman, Ali Atebar, Hugh Ellerman, Eric Rohrer, Preston Dean and Xavier Lopez. Dean went 2-2.

The Bruins sent Christian Canapa, Sean Melton, TJ Spangler, Jacob Richards, Jorden Marinelli (2-2) and Jeff Camilli.
