Taz wins season opener
With a final score of 650-138, the El Dorado Hills Tasmanian Devils swim team established an early season record of 1-0 by defeating the Folsom Sea Otters on Saturday, May 31, at the El Dorado Hills Community Services District swimming pool.
It was the first dual meet of the season for both Suburban Swim League teams.
Sea Otter head coach Travis Folsom was anxious to get the Otters’ 2014 season underway. “Today, of course, is our very first meet and I’m just so excited to be here visiting the Taz. I’m most looking forward to the free relays toward the end of the meet,” Folsom said. “Those are the most exciting for the swimmers and me. Other than that, this is one great day, we’ve got bright, sunny skies … what’s not to like?”
The meet started off strong for the Taz, as the Devils swept Events 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 in the 100 yard individual medley, Event 9 in the 100 yard free relay, and Events 12 and 14 in the 100 yard medley relay.
“I’m very excited for our first meet and for our new swimmers,” said Taz head coach Marc Brown. “I just know we’ll continue to post some excellent times throughout the day.”
Brown believed his team would do well despite facing some challenges. “We should do pretty good today, although we are missing quite a few older swimmers due to graduation and other events,” the coach said. “I was on the phone last night calling our senior swimmers. I asked them to show up for today’s meet, so we have them swimming today after being up all night!”
Top scoring Devils were as follows: Katie Tadayeski, 10 points, 6 and under women; Callahan McColley, 8 points, 6 and under men; Kate Goff, 11 points, 7-8 women; Bryce Williams, 15 points, 7-8 men; Alexis MacKie, 13 points, 9-10 women; Patrick Sammon, 15 points, 9-10 men; Catherine Wismar, 15 points, 11-12 women; JT Ross, 15 points, 11-12 men; Payton Valencia, 15 points, 13-14 women; Everett Forbes, 11 points, 13-14 men; Sam Sruba, 11 points, 15-18 women; Jason Phen, 15 points, 15-18 men.
Saturday, June 7, the Taz are scheduled to visit the nearby Sierra Sharks in hopes of a victory and subsequent 2-0 status. Last season, the Taz beat the Sharks 483-306 at home.
