Tennis: Lady Trojans silence Bears

FOLSOM — Nine matches led to a sweep Tuesday for the Oak Ridge High girls tennis team in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs.

The Lady Trojans, winners of the Delta River League title, knocked off the visiting Merced Bears, 9-0, at the Broadstone Racquet Club. The win sends Oak Ridge into the quarterfinals against St. Mary’s, the Tri-City Athletic League champions. That match will be held Monday, also at Broadstone.

“They all played solid,” Oak Ridge head coach Ralph Clark said. “We have four freshmen in the line-up.”

Two of those freshmen are one of the Trojans’ doubles teams. Kelly McMillen and Cheljea Jang knocked off the Bears’ Julia McLeod and Alexa Luna, 7-6, 6-1. The duo relied on communication and volleys that led to their victory.

“We’re both communicating,” McMillen said, with Jang adding, “We’re both trading spots.”

Clark added, “They took charge in the second set (after tie-breaker in first set).”

Another doubles team winning for the Trojans were Haesoo Kim, a senior, and Jessica Williams, a junior. They played on 30 minutes to dismantle Merced’s Jill Tiu and Ashton Espino, 6-0, 6-1. Although an easy win, Kim and Williams felt their opponents were competitive.

“I think that they were a really great team,” Williams said.

Kim played solid at the net, with Williams serving and communicating during their match.

“My volleys aren’t that great, hers are awesome,” said Williams of Kim’s play. Kim added, “I usually say ‘you got it’ or ‘I got it.’”

Now the level of competition becomes tougher for the Trojans if they want to win the section’s blue banner.

“We last played them (St. Mary’s) in the same round of the playoffs in 2010,” said Clark, whose team lost 7-2. “Hopefully, everyone is ready to play and we will get some crowd support on the holiday.”

Kim added, “Just keep practicing and getting better.”
