Track and Field athletes headed to Masters

Oak Ridge athletes broke school records and achieved personal bests at the D1 Section Finals at Elk Grove High School Friday.

Junior Jacob Sipes broke the 300-meter hurdles school record with his 37.77-second first-place finish, an improvement of eight-tenths of second. Sipes’ time is the third fastest in the state and 15th fastest in the nation. He earned a gold medal for being a section champion. Sipes also anchored the 4 x 100-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish with a time of 42.48 (second fastest all-time at Oak Ridge).

Sophomore Austin Laut set a Frosh/Soph school record in the pole vault with a vault of 13 feet, 7 inches (1 inch personal best). This ranks Austin fifth all-time at Oak Ridge. Austin placed ninth and qualified for the Masters meet.

Rachel Peterson raced very well in the 3,200-meter run, placing fifth with a great time of 11:04.40 (fourth fastest all-time at Oak Ridge and a 7 second personal best).

Listed below are the qualifiers for next week’s Masters meets (trials on May 23 and finals on May 24):

Boys 4 x 100-meter relay (Dominick Worsham, Zach Youngberg, Bryce Williams, Jacob Sipes), 4th, 42.48

Ellie Velez: girls 1.600-meter run, 12th, 5:16.59

Jake Zeltner: boys 1,600-meter run, 15th, 4:27.55

Jacob Sipes: boys 300-meter hurdles, 1st, 37.77

Rachel Peterson: girls 3,200-meter run, 5th, 11:04.40

Girls 4 x 400-meter relay (Sabrina Andrus, Caitlin Jolette, Jasmine Pears, Kristina O’Donnell), 9th, 4:04.14

Austin Laut: boys pole vault, 9th, 13 feet, 7 inches

Kasian Strawick: boys pole vault, tied for 12th, 12 feet, 7 inches

Carina Williams: girls high jump, tied for 11th, 4 feet, 11 inches (qualified for Masters at D1 section meet)

Will Vaughn: boys high jump, 8th, 6 feet, 2 inches (qualified for Masters at D1 section meet)

Justin Priest: boys high jump, 9th, 6 feet (qualified for Masters at D1 section meet)

Oak Ridge will have 16 track and field athletes competing at the Masters meet at Elk Grove High School. At the May 23 Masters trials the field events start at 3 p.m. and the running events start at 4 p.m. At the May 24 Masters finals field events start at 2 p.m. and the running events start at 6 p.m. The top three finishers at the Masters finals qualify for the state meet; trials are on May 31 and finals are on June 1 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
