Track and field: Good opener for Oak Ridge athletes

ELK GROVE — It was a great day of competition despite the weather for the Oak Ridge track and field athletes at the Capital Classic Relays held at Elk Grove High last Saturday.

It was cold and windy at the Elk Grove High School track facility but Oak Ridge athletes still turned in many outstanding performances. In all, 16 schools competed in the invitational, the first CIF- sanctioned track and field invitational for all the participating schools.

Medals were given to the top three finishers in the individual events and the top three relay teams. Overall, Oak Ridge athletes earned 65 medals fo an impressive start of the season. Seven individual first place performances were turned in by Trojan athletes and seven Oak Ridge relay teams placed first.

The following athletes placed first in their events: Greg Smolarski (varsity boys pole vault, 12-0), Austin Laut (frosh/soph boys pole vault, 10-6), Ashley Dean (varsity girls pole vault, 8-6), Jaimi Gotro (frosh/soph girls pole vault, 7-0), Jaimi Gotro (frosh/soph girls 100m Hurdles, 19.28), Mikhayla Polivka (frosh/soph girls 1,600m run, 6:04.78), and Kyle Kauffman (frosh/soph boys 1,600m run, 5:09.05).

The frosh/soph girls distance Medley team placed first and set a meet record of 13:48.51. Peyton Wright (ran 1,200m leg), Kristina O’Donnell (ran 400m leg), Arial Hendrickson (ran 800m leg), and Briana Dulgar (ran 1,600m leg).

The next invitational for Oak Ridge is Saturday’s Sac State High School Classic held at Sacramento State University. This highly competitive varsity-only meet which has 35 schools registered. The track events start at 9:45 a.m. and the field events start at 10 am.
