Trojan, Bruin runners have strong races

SACRAMENTO — Oak Ridge and Ponderosa boys and girls cross-country teams performed strong at the Delta River League meet at Granite Regional Park Wednesday.

The Trojan boys finished in third place with 95 points. League and intra-county rival Ponderosa was fourth with 104 points. Sheldon took first place with 24 points and Jesuit second at 31 points.

Top finishes were the Bruins’ David Duncan, who took 12th place with a time of 16 minutes, 48 seconds, and Josh Boiler, 15th place at 17:01 in the 3.1 miles course.

The Trojans were led by Patrick Irwin, 15th at 17:12; Alex Merry, 17th at 17:15 and Colin Pilcher, 18th at 17:15.

“Our boys also put in a strong team effort,” Oak Ridge head coach Fairley said. “Sheldon and Jesuit have very strong varsity boys teams, so it was great to see our boys race well against them.”

In the girls races that was also 3.1 miles, Oak Ridge took fifth place with an 85, and Ponderosa sixth at 148 points.

Ponderosa’s Hannah O’Donnell took 12th place at 20:10. Oak Ridge’s Mikhayla Polivka was 15th at 20:15.

“Mikhayla did a great job leading the pack of girls to the finish line,” Fairley said.

Ponderosa head coach Karen Norwood added, “Hannah has been doing great. We’re seeing her really blossom. I’ve been real pleased with everyone,”

Oak Ridge took second place as a team in the frosh/soph boys meet that was 2.2 miles.Three local runners placed third through fifth: Ponderosa’s Shane Marshall (12:02), Oak Ridge’s Luke Bricca (12:03) and teammate Austin Streetman (12:07).

Ponderosa was second in the frosh/soph girls race. Claire Hoffman took second place for Ponderosa with at time of 14:11, also in the 2.2-mile race. Oak Ridge’s Katie Sanfelice was 23rd at 16:15.
