Trojan spikers advance
Playing at home in the first round of the section playoffs, Oak Ridge knocked off Davis in four sets, 25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17.
“They just get into a rhythm. They’re a team that you can’t really micromanage a lot, and they sort of work out the bugs on their own,” Trojan coach Melanie DeMure said.
Oak Ridge hit the ground running when Storm Van Soldt blocked a Davis hit, then after a bump and set, smashed it for a Trojan kill. A Chase Barri ace and another Van Soldt kill extended the lead and Oak Ridge led 16-6 thanks to a Sam Greenleaf ace. Davis rallied but the Trojans closed the set out with a Chase Meilbreck kill.
Davis rebounded in the second set before Oak Ridge rallied. Troy still trailed 19-23 before Brock Middleton took over with a kill, block and another kill as Oak Ridge went up 2-0.
After the Blue Devils took the third set, the fourth was neck-and-neck as the two teams traded points. Tied at 11-11, a Barri tip fell and, after a Middleton kill, Ben Kopania hit an ace as Oak Ridge held a 14-11 advantage. Davis rallied to within 16-15 but Nick Camagna’s kill jump-started an Oak Ridge run that put the game out of reach at 23-17. A Greenleaf push and a Middleton block ended it.
The Trojans next play tomorrow at Nevada Union.
“It’s just a matter of which team is going to show. Are we going to be aggressive, or are they going to be lackadaisical? All I care about is that they go out and play hard,” DeMure said.
