Trojan tennis advances
FOLSOM — If extra rest or practice time helps in the sport of tennis than Oak Ridge has both after making quick work of Tracy 9-0 to open the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs Tuesday at Broadstone Racquet Club.
The victory advanced the Trojans to Monday’s quarterfinal at Davis, a squad that eliminated Oak Ridge last season.
“We have more depth than last year so hopefully we’ll be very competitive against Davis,” Troy coach Patrick Ryan said. “We rolled today with everyone winning in straight sets. It was good for us to get that real match time and toughness which was important — making us play under pressure.”
Ironically, the match taking the longest Monday was the one Oak Ridge’s No. 1 singles player Jimmy Giovannini was involved in. Facing Ryan Black, a ball-returning machine, Giovannini, who was back in action yesterday in Turlock at the individual section tournament, had to work for his 6-2, 7-5 victory.
“Jimmy had a tough match which was good — two good sets,” Ryan said.
Nic Atkinson, Jacob Zetlin, Charlie Conarro, Simon Chan and Matt Fergerson joined Giovannini with singles wins while the doubles duos of Matthew Lai-Scotty Lee, Max He-Mitchell Jensen and Austin Mitchell-Taylor Ellerman were victorious.
