FOLSOM — Oak Ridge High’s 7-2 regular season-ending victory over Ponderosa last month at the Broadstone Racquet Club was the finishing touches to their first, perfect 10-0 Delta River League season and second Division I league championship.
The Lady Trojans won 4-of-6 singles matches and swept doubles. Oak Ridge clinched the title after its defeat of Folsom earlier in October. Saint Francis, a long-time dominator in D-I, finished second while Pleasant Grove was third. The top three make the playoffs.
The Trojans open the Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs this week, hosting either Merced, the No. 2 seed from the Central California Conference, or Downey, the Modesto Metro Conference’s second seed.
“Our goal and what I’m expecting is to have a great showing in the postseason,” Oak Ridge coach Ralph Clark said. “We’ll probably catch St. Mary’s in the quarters and Rocklin in the semis. We’ll need to concentrate on one match at a time but if the girls all come to play it could be a big year for us.”
Before tackling Ponderosa on Oct. 24, Oak Ridge rolled out the balloons, flowers, decorations and food in celebration of Senior Day — honoring Rachel Librach, Miranda Miller, Heather Dunham, Ashlee Gonzales, Haesoo Kim, Kami Lally and Emily Abraham. Trojan athletic direction Steve White was on hand to present the CIF banner to the seniors.
“All of our seniors are great leaders and supply a solid foundation for the team as the younger girls gained experience,” Clark said. “Captain Rachel Librach is a great example of someone who works hard on every point.”
All seven seniors played against the Bruins, six in singles. Librach (No.1), Miller (No. 2), Gonzales (No. 5) and Abraham (No.6) posted straight set wins over Ashley Tank, Sam Olson, Lexi Comstock and Laura Parkyn while Kim (No. 3) and Heather Dunham (No. 4) lost exciting tie breakers to Paige Bergin and Katie Wright.
In doubles, Oak Ridge had wins at No. 1: Julia Vanboening-Samantha Newman over Katie Johnson-Korinn Trinies; No. 2: Lally-Lan Zhao against Natanya Ackerly-Mariah Price; and No. 3: Gabby Burton-Darshini Gupta over Devanna Morales-Brittany West.
“Our players all tried as hard as they could to compete with the Oak Ridge girls who are No. 1 in our league. I was proud of our team,” Bruin coach Don Eddy said.
Ponderosa’s resurfaced and newly painted courts brought the Bruins back to the campus after years at the Millennium SportsClub. Relatively young with just four seniors, Ponderosa went 0-10 in league.
The Bruins held their Sr. Day against Pleasant Grove. Co-captains Bergin, Wright and Trinies, all four-year players, were honored as was first-year player Rebecca Massek.
