Trojans pitch, hit, defend in victory

SHINGLE SPRINGS — Austin Root pitched six solid innings, was backed by two double plays and six extra-base hits as visiting Oak Ridge took the first of a three-game series with Ponderosa 10-2 Monday.

The win put the Trojans at 10-3 in the Delta River League while the Bruins, who scored in their first and last at bat, fall to 2-11.

Troy Zeier’s RBI single put Ponderosa on the board but Oak Ridge went ahead for good as Logan Marston doubled and John Rico and Mickey Meinhofer hit RBI singles.

Ross Dwelly doubled in the third and scored on a Ryan Sullivan single as Troy extended in the third. It was 5-1 after Meinhofer’s sacrifice fly plated FP Santangelo and a Tanner Ales’ groundout drove home Chris Roppolo.

Meanwhile, Root, who scattered seven hits, escaped a jam in the fifth when Michael Green singled, Ryan Carey walked and Matthew McBride was hit to load the bases. Oak Ridge third baseman Logan Denholm stayed with a hot shot off the bat of Matt Poulin to get the out at first to end the inning.

Alec de Watteville’s RBI triple and Meinhofer’s third RBI on a sacrifice fly put the Trojans ahead 7-1 against Bruin starter Parker Wright. Oak Ridge added three more in the seventh after Wright’s departure as Dwelley drilled a solo home run and Denholm and Santangelo picked up RBIs.

McBride’s double drove in Carey as Ponderosa added a late run.

Santangelo doubled twice and singled; de Watteville was 2-for-4; Dwelley also doubled; and Sullivan added two hits for Oak Ridge. For the Bruins, Zeier was 2-for-3 and Ian Boyle tripled.
