Trojans squash Sheldon
By Scott Warden
Host Oak Ridge broke from an early tie with 35 second-quarter points Friday to completely dominate Sheldon 56-7 and improve to 6-1 on the season.
“We started out a little shaky defensively on that first possession then our team game to life. Everyone played hard and our running backs were able to have a big game tonight,” Trojan coach Eric Cavaliere said. “Our offensive line is really improving each week and I am really pleased with the overall effort of everyone on the team. This was a good victory tonight and now we need to start preparing for next week.”
On Friday night the offensive line for Oak Ridge protected Ian Book the entire evening as the sophomore quarterback threw for 166 yards on the night with four touchdown passes, three to Justin Priest. The rushing attack for Oak Ridge was equally productive as Josh Wellman gained 69 yards on the ground with three touchdowns, Tanner Hughes had 74 yards rushing and Stephen Douglas added 62 yards along with a touchdown.
The scoring barrage started for Oak Ridge with Book finding Priest on an 8-yard touchdown pass, part of 125 yards receiving Priest racked up.
Tied 7-7, Troy’s defense took over. After allowing Sheldon to march done the field to open the game, Colton Giorgi, Trent Buenzli, Thomas Mahlman, Michael DeBeau, Victor Bunce, James Portilla, Nick Menendez, Austin Clarke, Bishane Sagal and Max Braddock along with a host of several other Trojans suffocated the Husky offensive attack. For the remainder of the night Sheldon was unable to move the ball into Oak Ridge territory.
With the defense dominating, Oak Ridge stared at a short field the entire night. The result was the Trojans second quarter outburst, the last touchdown a 5-yard pass from Book to Buenzli to make the score 42-7 at the intermission.
Over the course of the second half Oak Ridge scored two more times in the third quarter and ate up the clock with their rushing attack in the fourth on the way to the convincing Homecoming victory over Sheldon.
The Trojans travel to Shingle Springs to take on Ponderosa this Friday.
