After rattling off five wins to start the season, the Oak Ridge football team was brought back to earth as visiting Folsom pummeled the Trojans 49-21 Friday to open Delta River League play.

“Generally speaking, they outplayed us. They outplayed us at every position, and they outcoached us,” Oak Ridge coach Eric Cavaliere said.

The much-hyped game never materialized. Folsom’s spread offense, led by sophomore quarterback Jake Browning’s six touchdown passes, was lethal beginning with Browning’s 9-yard pass to Harry Lipnosky to give the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead. Oak Ridge did immediately answer behind the running of Josh Wellman and Tanner Hughes who powered into the end zone as Troy tied the Bulldogs at 7-apiece.

Folsom retook the lead on Browning’s 26-yard pass to Lipnosky and after Eddie Flores intercepted Oak Ridge’s Juan Samuels, Browning scrambled out of the pocket, evaded two Trojan tacklers and found  Phillip Carter alone in the end zone. The Trojans countered as Samuels hit Byron Spain for a 23-yard scoring strike.

The Folsom offense continued to pile up points — Browning’s 5-yard pass to Bailey Laolagi and his 7-yarder to Troy Knox after Flores’ second interception. At halftime Oak Ridge trailed by 21 points.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Folsom opened the fourth with Josiash Deguara’s 9-yard rushing score to extend to 42-14. Troy got it back to within three scores after Samuels hit a wide-open Justin Priest for a 27-yard touchdown. Browning’s sixth touchdown pass went to Carter to further lock up the Bulldogs’ win.

“You can’t fall behind against Folsom. It’s very hard to play catch up,” Cavaliere said.
