Trojans triumph in NorCal volleyball tournament

The Oak Ridge Trojans boys varsity volleyball team won the NorCal Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Vallejo earlier this month.

Led by senior outside hitters Trent Stigerts and Tim Smolarski, the Oak Ridge team nearly went undefeated, losing only one game all day in the championship match against Drake High School. Returning juniors middle blocker Storm Van Soldt and outside hitter Michael Montejano keyed an offense that had perhaps its best performance all season. Middle blocker Brook Middleton and outside hitter Tanner Bacci were also key contributors, providing timely spikes and blocks.

Coach Melanie DeMure said the team played very well and that she and assistant coaches Mike Moore and Breanne Horton “… always knew the team was capable of great things.”

While the team started slowly this year, DeMure has successfully integrated three freshmen onto the team — outside hitter Chase Barri, libero Ben Kopania and setter Sam Greenleaf. Each of the freshmen have made solid contributions, boding well for the future of the program.

The Trojans next head into a tough stretch against league opponents Folsom, Sheldon, Jesuit and Ponderosa.
