Varsity girls run to victory

Cool, cloudy conditions helped heat up Saturday’s Josh Ruff Memorial Trojan Cross Country Invitational at the Willow Hills course in Folsom.

Host Oak Ridge High School did well in the races that pitted 17 high school teams against each other. The varsity Lady Trojans outshone everyone on the course, placing first with 30 points. The varsity boys placed second with 67 points and the JV boys placed second with 38 points. The frosh/soph boys also placed second with 67 points.

Senior Rachel Peterson, who placed fourth with a time of 20:04 over the hilly 5,000-meter course (3.1 miles), led her team to victory. The varsity girls placed eight girls in the top 15. The varsity boys were led by junior Alex Merry who placed 10th with a time of 17:34. The varsity boys had five runners in the top 17. The frosh/soph boys were led by sophomore Blake Hanson who placed third with a time of 12:37 over the 3,400-meter course. The frosh/soph boys had three runners in the top nine. The junior varsity boys were led by senior Adrian Griffith who placed first with a time of 18:31. The JV boys had five runners in the top 20. The JV girls were led by junior Lauren Martinez who place third with a time of 23:57. The JV girls had three runners in the top 20. The frosh/soph girls were led by freshman Alexis Miller who placed first with a time of 14:28.

The JV  and frosh/soph girls had no team scores because only three athletes competed for each team.

“It was a great day of racing for the Oak Ridge cross country athletes,” said coach Rob Fairley. “They obtained invaluable experience racing on the Willow Hills course which is the site of the Delta River League Championships (Nov. 2) and the Section Championships (Nov. 16).”

The varsity Oak Ridge cross country teams will compete at the prestigious Stanford Invitational at the Stanford University golf course on Saturday, Sept. 28. The varsity boys Division 1 race is at 11 a.m. and varsity girls Division 1 race is at 11:30 a.m. Teams throughout the state and out of the state will compete at the Stanford Invitational.
