Varsity girls tops at first meet

Oak Ridge’s varsity girls cross-country team got a great start at the Oakmont Invitational at Maidu Park on Aug. 30, pacing first with 38 points. Six varsity girls placed in the top 20 in a very competitive race.

The varsity girls beat Woodcreek
and St. Francis; both teams quali-
fied for the state meet last year.
Only 24 seconds separated Oak Ridge’s first finisher Maddy Denner and fifth finisher Mikhayla Polivka. Freshmen Maddy Denner and Elena Denner had great debut varsity races placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Arial Hendrickson (seventh), Sarah Dolley (ninth), Mikhayla Polivka (11th), and Gloria Dabiri (20th) also raced very well in the varsity girls’ race. The six varsity girls who raced obtained medals.

The varsity boys’ team placed sixth with 158 points. Senior Alex Merry raced very well, placing ninth in the varsity boys’ race with a time of 12:57 for the 4,000-meter (2.5 miles) course. Patrick Irwin also raced well for the varsity boys, placing second on the team and 31st in the race with a time of 13:52.

The Frosh/Soph girls’ team placed third with 103 points. The team was led by Kayla Renner (sixth, 16:30) and Haley Dean (10th, 17:03). The Frosh/Soph boys’ team placed third with 89 points. The Frosh/Soph boys were led by Drew Spencer (eighth, 14:04) and Rohan Nalawadi (10th, 14:15).

The JV Girls were led by Ellie Velez (second, 17:29) and Sabrina Andrus (17:32). The JV girls had no team score because only four athletes competed. Kyle Denison (25th, 16:31) and Erik Tikhohov (27th, 16:45) led the JV boys. The JV boys had no team score because only three athletes competed.
