Water Polo: Late scoring spree aids Troy over Ponderosa
The first 25 minutes of Tuesday’s Oak Ridge-Ponderosa boys Delta Valley League water polo match at the El Dorado Hills Community Services District pool was defensive.
But in the final three minutes, the host Trojans went on a scoring spree that led to a 10-5 victory.
Oak Ridge (1-0, 5-2) led just 6-5 at the start of the final quarter but rattled off four goals that started when Christopher Nguyen fired a shot into the net with 2:26 left.
Austin Turville’s penalty shot increased the Trojans’ lead and Oak Ridge extended that lead as Trevor Dong and Brian Ebinger scored 41 seconds apart.
“We had some letdowns in the first half and let them back in the game,” Troy coach Don McCormick said. “At halftime we told them the key to winning was the defense. It was nice to see them clamp down in the second half.”
Oak Ridge led 4-3 after one quarter and 5-4 at halftime.
“It was really defensive until the last three minutes,” Ponderosa head coach Matt Jaehn said. “But I was really happy with the way our team played for three and a half quarters. Oak Ridge is tough competition.”
Turville, one of nine Trojan seniors, had three goals in the game. Aaron Taylor and Dong had two goals each; Kyle Bare, Nguyen and Ebinger finished with a goal each.
Ponderosa (0-2, 1-3) scored all but one of its goals in the first half. Shelby Lee, one of eight seniors on the team, had three goals. Travis Marshall, who scored the Bruins’ lone goal in the third quarter, and Brandon McConkie had a goal each.
The Bruins have eight seniors on this year’s team. In addition, there are four girls on the roster — Hannah Hill, Sierra Rose Krohn, Ellie Miller and Kathryn Suggs.
The boys junior varsity squad toppled Ponderosa 24-10.
