Gold River Carpet One celebrates 20 years, going strong

Jeff and Meredith Krekelberg have been successful business and family partners for more than 20 years. Mutual respect and appreciation for one another, and pride in their work, has led to a continuing expansion of their Gold River Carpet One store in Rancho Cordova.

Jeff gives Meredith a lot of credit. “She has a brilliant mind. She has great ideas,” he said. Meredith, who handles the office and financial end of the business, in turn puts the spotlight on Jeff. “Jeff really knows the business. He knows what goes into every product, which product goes best in which place, and the best method of installation. Plus, he’s a good salesman,” she said.

The Krekelbergs opened their store east of Sunrise Boulevard and next to Highway 50 in October 1991. Since then they have expanded several times. Today the showrooms display thousands of samples of carpets, wood, tile, vinyl and laminate flooring. “It can be overwhelming for some customers, but our sales people help them narrow their choices,” said Meredith. Samples of different types of flooring are installed on the floor so customers can see how a product wears or how a pattern looks in place.

Five years ago the Krekelbergs opened a second store, Gold River Flooring Gallery, in Rocklin.

“Family businesses are growing closer and tighter. We all got tired of the horror stories,” said Jeff. “B2B  (business-to-business) are pulling together. Carpet One is a family owned buying cooperative for family owned flooring businesses. We are partnering with Manual Joseph Appliance Center and Kitchen Mart at both of our locations. They are family owned businesses too.”

Jeff moved to St. Andrews Village in El Dorado Hills when he was 5. His parents had a family business. Jeff attended Jackson Elementary School and graduated from Ponderosa High School in 1981. He worked in the flooring business for eight years before he and Meredith decided to open their own store.

Meredith grew up in Folsom, where she attended Theodore Judah Elementary School and Folsom High School.

Their sons are both graduates of Oak Ridge High School. Dan, 26, works for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, on renewable energy systems. Son Blake, 20, is a PFC in the U.S. Army, MOS Artillery, 18th Fires Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Although Meredith dreams that someday Blake will come home and want to go into the family business, she and Jeff are busy with two locations. It is Jeff’s responsibility to turn the new hires into flooring specialists and sales professionals. “They go through rigorous training to be able to meet the needs of our customers,” he said.

Gold River Carpet One has flooring products that range from affordable to luxury, purchased directly from the manufacturers. Many of the store’s products are made in the USA, and they have a good selection of Green Select floor coverings.

For carpets, nylon is the most popular material because it is hard-wearing, easy-to-clean and comes in a bright array of colors, said Jeff. Olefin carpets, which originally came on the market for outdoor use, are finding their way indoors. Olefin is resistant to deterioration from mildew, is stain- and soil-resistant and colorfast. Wool is naturally fire-retardant. It is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. It is a renewable resource and biodegradable.

Jeff and Meredith are especially proud of their “Healthier Living” flooring installation system. “It’s been a big success,” said Jeff. First, the installers use a HEPA vacuum to reduce dust on the existing floor covering. They remove the old carpet or floor covering, then apply HealthinEx antimicrobial treatment. HealthinEx disinfects, protects and diminishes allergens, mold, mildew and bacteria. On the clean surface they lay an antimicrobial premium carpet cushion. The carpet is installed and HEPA vacuumed for a final finish. “It adds one or two hours, or up to a day, depending on the size, but it’s worth it,” said Jeff. With this installation method the manufacturers’ wear and texture retention warranties are doubled.

For wood flooring, they carry everything from several grades of bamboo to fine hardwoods. Other choices are tiles, vinyls and laminates. Gold River installers will also put in new baseboards.

Warranties are offered for all floor coverings at five different levels.

Meredith said she’s pleased that they offer their exclusive Beautiful Guarantee. “We want our customers to be 100 percent happy that the floor we’ve created together is as beautiful as they dreamed. If not, we will replace it one time,” she said.

“More customers trust family owned businesses,” said Jeff. “They’re the backbone of America.”
