Oppose SB 2 & SB 50

By From page A5 | August 09, 2017

EDITOR:

I would like to encourage all residents of El Dorado County to oppose two bills moving through the state Legislature, SB 2 and SB 50. Both bills relate to the recording of property deeds and other public documents. Both bills would require more money from local taxpayers, only to be wasted by bloated and inefficient state government.

SB 2 would impose a $75 fee on every recorded real estate document. The El Dorado County Recorder-Clerk’s Office would be required to collect this fee, only to turn it over to the state of California to be used for subsidized and low-income housing in other portions of the state.

In my opinion, hard working property owners already pay enough in taxes and they do not need to pay more money to a state government that has proven time and again that it cannot manage the financial resources that we entrust to it.

SB 50 is the second bill that needs to be closely watched. SB 50 would give the state government the ability to determine who purchases federal land. In order to accomplish this, they would require local recorder-clerks to set up local programs to determine if purchasers of federal land meet state-mandated criteria. Not only is this an undue burden on local jurisdictions, but it also is unconstitutional. The state government has no lawful ability to determine who can purchase federal land.

In June 2018 I am hoping to be elected El Dorado County’s next recorder-clerk. I think it is important that the next recorder-clerk keep a close eye on state legislation that could negatively affect our freedoms and our American way of life. All El Dorado County taxpayers need to remind our state legislators that they cannot tax us off our own property. I am prepared to fight for El Dorado County taxpayers/property owners.
