When something outlives it’s usefullness

Title IX defined: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. (Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972).

This program was designed specifically to enable women the same opportunities in college as men with the goal of having as many women playing sports in our collegiate programs as men.

Flash forward 45 years and research shows that today 58 percent female to 42 percent males graduate from college while participation in collegiate sports equates to males at 60 percent while females are at 35 percent. With Title IX laws still in effect colleges are forced to eliminate men’s athletic programs not due to a desire of men to participate but a lack of desire for women to play sports.

An example of this is I have asked the dean and the athletic director of Folsom Lake College to look at adding men’s and women’s wrestling to their program. It seemed to me a no-brainer with their research and mine showing that they would have at least 40 men participating first year but only five women and they do not have a female sport that could balance out the 40-man wrestling team. In fact they had just dropped their ladies golf team due to lack of participation and were upside down men’s baseball (32) to women’s softball (15) participants.

So due to Title IX constraints FLC had to say no to a fully sponsored wrestling program in a wrestling hot bed area. In other words, men can’t play their sport because women don’t want to play.

Does this situation sound reasonable or fair?
