Biting comedy tackles faith, family

By From page B4 | July 05, 2017

Capital Stage presents “Bad Jews” by Joshua Harmon. Amy Resnick, last seen at Capital Stage in “August: Osage County” and “Blackberry Winter,” will direct this Sacramento premiere. “Bad Jews” will be the sixth and final production of Capital Stage’s 2016-17 Season: Love + War, and will run June 21 through July 23.

In the play, the night after their grandfather’s funeral three cousins engage in a battle royale over a family heirloom. In one corner is the unstoppable and self-assured force of “Super Jew” Daphna and in the other the immovable and entitled object of her secular cousin Liam. And in the middle is Liam’s brother Jonah, trying to stay out of the fray. A fierce, biting comedy about family, faith and what you choose to believe, when you’re chosen.

Harmon’s play “Bad Jews” received its world premiere at Roundabout Underground and was the first production to transfer to the Roundabout’s Laura Pels Theatre (Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Award nominations, Best Play). It has since become the third most-produced play in the United States this season and transferred to London’s West End after sell-out runs at Theatre Royal Bath and the St. James Theatre.

Bad Jews will feature Jeremy Kahn, Chloe King, Tara Sissom and Noah Thompson — all making their Capital Stage debut. The production design team will include Timothy McNamara (lighting design), Rebecca Redmond (costume design), Eric Broadwater (scenic design), Emi Teixeira (properties design) and Ed Lee (sound design).
