Sacramento State’s University Union Gallery announces the show Right Now and Yesterday, a collection of paintings that celebrate abstraction as an invitation to examine our human experience by Caiti Chan.

The exhibit will be on display Monday, Sept. 25, through Thursday, Oct. 19, with a special opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28. The reception will celebrate the work of the artist and serve as a time for guests to ask the artist any questions. Light refreshments will be provided and parking will be free on the top floor of Parking Structure III during the reception.

Chan’s work can be described as process driven. Throughout her journey of creating new work, she focused on materials being used; meanwhile Chan depends on color and texture to push the image towards completion. In addition to color and texture, Chan relies on emotion to decide which materials to use on different works of art. Currently, she uses materials such as salt, isopropyl alcohol and cellophane to make paintings. She notes that these materials speak to her personal background and that they connect to viewers’ unique experiences.

Chan’s most recent work focuses on reusing as well as resurrecting certain materials in the studio. In her process, she took cellophane wrap and laid it upon wet paint in order to leave behind its texture. She would go through this process several times with the same piece of cellophane. By recreating this cellophane, she would make something once seen as disposable as the focus of a new painting.

The University Union Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with special event hours on Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
