Got talent? Show fairgoers what you can do

PLACERVILLE — Highlight your talent for a chance to win well-deserved appreciation and honors. Participate in a contest or just come to watch; there’s sure to be a competition that interests you at the 2013 El Dorado County Fair.

Teen Jam is back! If you are in high school or younger and are in a band, come rock out on the Budweiser Stage Saturday from noon to 5:45 p.m. Times are chosen on a first come, first serve basis.

If you’re not in a band, but still want to showcase your vocal talent, here’s your chance. Flaunt it by entering the El Dorado County Fair Idol! Solo vocalists may sing a cappella or to professionally recorded tracks and will be judged on vocal talent, stage presence and entertainment appeal. Duets, trios, bands and accompaniment by any form of live musical instrument is not allowed. All contestants perform at the preliminary competition held on the Budweiser Stage at 2 p.m. on June 15. Three finalists will be chosen to perform at the final competition at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, on the Budweiser Stage. Call the Fair Office by June 13 to pre-register.

For the ultimate competitor, Kiwanis of Placerville presents the 69th annual John M. Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races to challenge your endurance, athleticism and strength. Race divisions include: Old Timer’s, Youth, Teen, High School Team Challenge, 911 Team, Women’s and the Championship race. Whatever your age, come to the grandstands on Sunday, June 16, to pre-register before 4 p.m. and earn the ultimate bragging rights for winning this adrenaline-charged race. Entry fees and prizes vary by age group. The event begins at 5 p.m.

For the ultimate competitor between the ages of 4 and 7 years old, Doug Veerkamp sponsors Mutton Bustin’ at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 14. Watch young cowboys and cowgirls ride sheep for fame and glory — a fun rodeo event for the whole family. Participants will receive a free T-shirt and one admission into the fair; the winner of each division will receive a buckle! Ages 4-5 will compete in the Lil Busters category and ages 6- to 7-year-olds will compete in the Busters category. Pre-register in the Fair office or call.

Think Outside of the Studio with the Plein Air Painting Competition. What is Plein Air Painting you ask? Plein Air translates to “open air.” This term is used to describe paintings that have been created outdoors, rather than in the studio. Photo references are not used. Come to the Fair Saturday, June 14, and capture the fun and excitement of fair time on your canvas and be entered to win up to $100! Pre-registration required by June 12.

For all the techies out there, or even those just getting started, the I “LIKE” It Photo Contest is a competition where everyone can participate! Whether you take the picture or are in the picture you can be part of a winning photo on Facebook. Capture the fun and excitement of the El Dorado County Fair! Simply take a picture with your camera phone or digital camera during the 2013 Fair, upload the picture to the El Dorado County Fair Facebook page and get your friends to “Like” it! The picture with the most “Likes” wins! Be sure to include a fun caption and tag your friends in each picture. Keep in mind friends and family will have to like the El Dorado County Fair Facebook page before liking your photo. All likes will be counted toward the final vote until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20. Winners will be announced Friday, June 22, with first place cash prize of $25 and second place will be awarded a four-pack of tickets to the 4th of July Family Blast Celebration.

It wouldn’t be a worthy fair without all the traditional fair foods: corn dogs, cotton candy and, of course, funnel cake. In honor of the infamous funnel cake the fair will host a Funnel Cake Eating Contests in the Kid’s Corral daily.

Every year the fair is held on Father’s Day weekend. To honor dads, the fair holds a Father Child Look-A-Like Contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, on the Budweiser Stage. It is free to enter with fair admission and pre-entry is not required. Come to the Main Stage 15 minutes before the contest to sign-up! There are categories for every Dad! Father/Son, Father/Daughter & Multi-Generations, with the chance to win one of many great raffle prizes.

Kid’s Big Wheel Races (ages 4 to 7 years old) are held every night near the Organ Room lawn. Big Wheels donated by Gold Country Ace Hardware and Hobbies. It’s free to enter with fair admission. Pre-entry not required. Winner receives a T-shirt and everyone gets a ribbon for participating. Come out and have your kiddo show off what he/she can do. Maybe they’ll be headed toward being the next Placerville Speedway champion.
