THE POTATO MASHER by Emeryl Logan

PITTSBURGH — Forget making mashed potatoes with hand-held mashers and conventional methods. Instead, what’s the most inventive and fun way you could mash real chunks of potatoes? Ore-Ida Steam n’ Mash, the brand of frozen potatoes that offers homemade mashed potatoes without the hassle, turned to parents and kids across the country for drawings of their smashing ideas and awarded 12-year-old Emeryl Logan of Cameron Park first prize.

“It’s a way to spend less, and have more fun. You take a bag of Steam N’ Mash Potatoes, microwave as directed, go to your favorite amusement park, put them on the tracks of the best roller coaster, ride it, it mashes the potatoes, then enjoy them!” Emeryl’s entry reads on the MashDestruction.com website. She earned $1,000 for her work.

Faith Joiner of Twin Peaks won the grand prize with “The Hippo Smash,” featuring a line of hippos in circus-like fashion preparing to pounce on the potatoes one by one.

The national promotion was designed to encourage parents and their kids to have fun in the kitchen together and underscored the breakthrough convenience of Ore-Ida Steam n’ Mash potatoes, which are chunks of pre-peeled potatoes ready to microwave and mash in minutes.

To enter the contest, parents submitted a drawing of their child’s fun masher idea along with a description of 50 words or less. America narrowed down the entries to the top 20 by voting online for their favorite. Then, a panel of Ore-Ida judges chose from the top 20 finalists and awarded the grand prize winner and five first place runners-up. Entries were judged on overall presentation and creativity, originality and ability to capture the spirit of the contest.
