Countdown to county fair begins

PLACERVILLE — We know you’ve been waiting … and it’s almost here! On June 13 the “Blue Jeans and Country Dreams” 2013 El Dorado County Fair begins. Come to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds from June 13-16 and join the fun!

Be transported to the outback as the Aussie Kingdom shows off native Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, bearded dragons, kookaburras and many more during their performances happening three times each day of Fair. Audiences will be able to see, touch and hear stories behind each captivating animal, and can even tour the educational and interactive areas during non-performance hours.

Travel back in time to the Civil War era when you visit the Sacramento Rangers, Company F, of the 2nd California Cavalry. Their authentic recreation of a small cavalry camp reflects how the soldiers lived while on expeditions, and members will even demonstrate mounted drills from the 1861 cavalry manual.

Don’t miss out on all of our talented musical acts this year. From rock n’ roll to country to classic blues, the El Dorado County Fair is sure to have a group or artist for you. On Saturday night head over to the Budweiser stage and take part in the concert that has become a favorite among fairgoers these past few years — the El Dorado Day on the Green. Swift Country, a Taylor Swift tribute band, kicks off the night at 5:30 p.m. when Kaylee Star takes the stage and performs all of your Taylor Swift favorites. The I Like It, I Love It — A Salute to Tim McGraw band follows at 7:30pm with hits from country music all-starTim McGraw. Finishing the night off right will be the Rolling Stones tribute band — Rolling Stones Unauthorized.

“Be ready for a lot of energy out of all three of these bands,” said Jody Gray, CEO of the fair, “Day on the Green has become a tradition. We knew when we were choosing Saturday night’s line up that we wanted only those who were going to have people up on their feet and dancing just like we’ve seen in the past.”

With four different stages and many musical performers during all four days of fair, Gray encourages guests to wear their dancing shoes.

Ready to release your competitive side? There are countless contests at this year’s fair. Have a car that makes grown men drool? Enter it into the Kneisel’s Collision Classic Car Show during any day of fair. Keep that smart phone handy and capture a picture at fair and enter it into the “I Like It” Photo Contest by uploading it to the El Dorado County Fair Facebook page. The picture with the most “Likes” wins! For anyone with an amazing voice, register for the El Dorado Idol competition by June 13 then compete in the preliminary competition at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. Finalists will compete for the title at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 16. Other favorites include the Clifton and Warren Haybucking Contest on Saturday, June 15, and the John M. Studebaker Wheel Barrow Races on Sunday, June 16. If you’re bringing your dad to the fair on Father’s Day, don’t forget to stop by the Budweiser Stage at 1 p.m. on Sunday for the annual Father-Child Look-A-Like Contest!

If you have kids, the fair is exactly where they will want to be this summer. With carnival rides and daily funnel cake eating contests, you’re going to be wishing you were a kid again. Take them by the FFA and 4-H animal exhibits and let them get up and close to the captivating animals. If you have children between the ages of 4 and 7 remember to bring them by the Kid’s Corral at 6 p.m. to participate in the Kid’s Big Wheels Race sponsored by Gold Country Ace Hardware. For those brave little ones, sign them up for a fair tradition — Mutton Bustin’! Sponsored by Doug Veerkamp, this fair favorite will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 14, in the Grandstands. Limited spots are available so be sure to register early.

Put on those blue jeans and come with a dream, because the fair is where dreams come true. As you walk through the fairgrounds, imagine each dream that has become a reality at this event. Whether you’re captivated by a farm animal that a FFA student spent countless hours raising, admiring the beautiful landscaping of an Adopt-A-Spot competitor or browsing the vendors selling their goods; no doubt everything you see at fair started with a dream, with a lot of hard work and likely with a little dirt on their blue jeans.

Buy discounted, presale tickets by June 12: $8 for ages 13 and older and $6 for seniors 60 and older and juniors 7 to 12 years old. Ticket packages, season passes and presale carnival tickets can all be purchased at the El Dorado County Fair website at or at the fair office at 100 Placerville Drive, Placerville.
