Softball: Lady Trojans roll past Ponderosa

Playing in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness game Thursday, the Oak Ridge Lady Trojans led from the start in a 7-1 Delta River League victory over visiting Ponderosa.

“That was the best game we’ve played all year. We got our bunts down, we moved runners, we made little fielding mistakes. Even the innings we didn’t score we kept the pressure on,” Oak Ridge coach Sam Kloczko said.

After Alyssa Burns set the Bruins down 1-2-3 to open the game, Troy took an early lead against Ponderosa starter Cassidy Lujan as Jackie Schmaeling tripled and scored on Lindsey Zito’s suicide squeeze.

Caitlyn Olan connected for a two-run homer in the third for a 3-0 advantage but Ponderosa’s bats began to come alive as Terra Jerpbak tripled to right field and scored when Veronica Greene doubled to left. Burns got out of the inning without any more damage, but the Trojan lead had shrunk.

Looking to tie the game up in the fifth, Ponderosa’s Shasta Stinson singled to center but Schmaeling picked up Bailey Nordquist’s bunt and threw out Stinson at second. Oak Ridge added another run in the bottom frame when Olan’s suicide squeeze scored Lauren Bertoy.

In the sixth, Burns walked Jerpbak but induced two fly outs. In the bottom half, Michelle Bardini singled and Jessica Burgess beat out a ground ball for runners at first and third. Amber Orchard’s single up the middle scored Bardini and after Bailey Cook grounded out to advance pinch-runner Katelyn Castro to second, Bertoy tripled off of the left field wall to score Burgess and Castro.

Courtnie Hauck and Rachel Timberman singled for the Bruins in their last at bat but Burns, a contact pitcher, worked ground outs from Melissa Silveria and Taylor Eilders to end the game.

“Huge win for us. With the win we jump back into second place in league, and for playoffs that’s key,” Kloczko said.

The loss kept the Bruins winless in league.

“We just have not gotten the big hits this year. Especially the two out hits. We’ve gotten runners on board, but just haven’t brought them home,” Ponderosa coach Dwayne Brekke said. “Right now we just have not found that spark.”

Batters with multi-hits for Oak Ridge include Lauren Bertoy with two and Olan with three. Jerpak had two hits for the Bruins.
