LOS ANGELES — Thirteen Oak Ridge track and field athletes competed at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in Los Angeles April 8-9 against top competitors from around the nation.

Benji Xie, Will Findlay and Shannon Trumbull turned in outstanding performances. Xie broke the school record in the 3,200-meter seeded race Saturday night, blazing eight laps in 9 minutes, 13.61 seconds to take 12th place.

“Benji ran a strategically very sound race by running very even 400 splits and finishing strong on his last 400 (65 seconds),” Oak Ridge coach Rob Fairley said. “Benji’s ran first 1,600 meters in 4:38 and his second 1,600 meters was 4:35.

“Benji’s performance indicates that he has an excellent opportunity to lower his time under 9:10 this season. He lowered his time by nine seconds Saturday, which is a tremendous improvement. Benji broke Amjed Aboukhadijeh’s record by one second. Amjed graduated in 2010 and is currently running for UCLA’s track team.”

Findlay had a great day high jumping at Arcadia, clearing 6-foot-3 inches, 6-5 and 6-7 on his first attempts. He had a good attempt at 6-9 but didn’t clear it. Findlay tied for fourth. His career personal best is 6-8.

Trumbull qualified for the 100-meter hurdles seeded race on Saturday night with a time of 15.17 seconds, and took eighth in the finals in 15.14, just two-hundredths of a second off her personal record.
