Girls tennis start SFL 3-0

FOLSOM — This is a young team put on the court for the Oak Ridge women’s varsity squad.

How young? One of the elder members of the team is junior doubles player Caroline Brandon who celebrated her sweet 16 birthday after a sweet 6-2, 6-0 victory on Sept. 12 over Folsom.

The Oak Ridge Trojans went on to easily handle the Folsom Bulldogs 7-2, followed by a narrow 5-4 victory over arch rival Del Oro last Wednesday to start league play 3-0 in the Sierra Foothill League and 7-3 overall.

“I’ve been playing for three years on the team,” said Brandon. “The team is looking pretty good this season. We definitely wanted to beat Del Oro since they are a big rival.”

One of the reasons for their success is the play of recently promoted No. 1 singles player sophomore Devika Pantpratinidhi, who dispatched her Bulldog opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 and then defeated the Del Oro Golden Eagle No. 1 singles Ali Isaac 6-3, 6-2 a day later.

“I just went out there with my game and executed,” said Pantpratinidhi. “My backhand has been working for me. I was hitting a lot of shots with my backhand.”

Freshman Clara Hill-Gaston is another young player who has stepped up for the team playing as the No. 3 singles player. Against the Bulldogs and the Golden Eagles she captured three-set victories. She came from behind to win 2-6, 7-5, (10-8) on Sept. 12 and 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 to beat Abby Edwards of Del Oro.

“It was like the playoffs started yesterday,” said Oak Ridge head coach Ralph Clark. “It was an extremely tight match with four three-setters. Freshman Clara Hill-Gaston came up big playing No. 3 singles. It was a team victory with the five wins scattered throughout the line up top to bottom.”

The coaching staff was obviously pleased with the performance against a tough Del Oro team and had the team beaming with confidence.

“We have high standards on this team,” said Kapri Lyons. “The last few years I have been on the team I have consistently won league, sections and have almost won state. So we have pretty high expectations for the year.”
