The Oak Ridge Trojans shutout the Vista del Lago Eagles, 49-0, in a non-conference home game Friday night.

Trojans’ starting quarterback Marco Baldacchino rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as Oak Ridge ran up a 28-0 first half score in rout of Vista del Lago. Baldacchino finished with 120 rushing yards. He also threw 13 for 16 with 173 yards passing.

Davin Simmons scored three touchdowns and had 81 yards rushing on 13 carries for Oak Ridge as the Trojans ran more than 200 rushing yards. Simmons had scores of one, two and eight-yard runs on the evening.

Trojan wide receiver Justin Poerio had 10 receptions for 147 yards and a 35-yard touchdown catch. He also contributed on defense with an interception and a forced fumble.

Oak Ridge opened the game with back-to-back scoring scoring drives capped with touchdown runs of 15 and 24 yards by Baldacchino for a quick 14-0 first quarter lead over the visiting Eagles. Simmons one-yard dive in the second quarter extended the lead to 21-0.

The Trojan defense never gave Vista del Lago a chance. With just over four minutes left in the half, Oak Ridge picked off an Eagles’ 3rd-and-12 pass attempt, setting up a Baldacchino to Poerio scoring strike one play later for a 28-0 lead.

A short punt by Vista del Lago in the third quarter was followed by a four-play drive and Simmons second rushing touchdown gave Oak Ridge a 35-0 advantage.

Later in the quarter Avant Jacobs’ punt return to the 35 and an Eagles’ personal foul put the ball on the 20-yard line. Two plays later Simmons added his third score of the game and Troy had a 42-0 lead.

Backup quarterback Cooper Crick added the final score on a 13-yard run for a 49-0 lead with 4:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Vista del Lago was finally able to put together a drive late in the fourth quarter. But the Oak Ridge defense halted the drive and the Eagles failed to convert a fourth down attempt deep in Trojan territory, sealing a season-opening victory.

Vista del Lago faced a tough defense all evening. In the fourth quarter the Eagles drove deep into Trojan territory, but were stopped on a fourth down attempt. Junior Sam Sanders led the defense with 11 tackles and an interception against the Eagles. Nate Otto and Hayden Nabers each had seven tackles and Devin Kemp finished with 1.5 sacks.
